Bioenergy is often considered to be greenhouse gas neutral, as the same amount of carbon that is sequestered by the biomass during plant growth is released during combustion. However, this argument falls short, as the system boundaries considered for bioenergy are often set too narrowly. As a result, aspects relevant for greenhouse gases are excluded. This issue is first demonstrated using the example of energy wood from forests in Section 3.1.1 and then addressed more broadly for bioenergy in Section 3.1.2.
